Picture taken 28 May 2004 shows a Bulgarian woman gathering rose petals in the Valley of Roses, near the town of Karlovo, in central Bulgaria. Its mild climate has made Bulgaria, along with Turkey and Morocco, one the world’s three largest producers of rosa damascena, whose oil is a much-wanted perfumery substance. Bulgaria also makes from the roses a solution called “rose water”, also used in cosmetics, rose jam and also a special rose type of their numerous varieties of schnapps. Bulgaria and Romania join the European Union 01 January 2007, a move that will raise the number of EU states to 27 and give the two former communist nations an economic boost.
